98%

In 1984 the educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom found that ordinary students, tutored one on one, outperformed 98% of students taught in a classroom. He called it the Two Sigma Problem.

I call it proof that you, the parent, are the greatest educational resource your child will ever have.

Why now

Homeschooling for the world to come

Our children are growing into a world where AI can perform surgery, write code and manage law without help. Work will likely become optional. That means that raising children will become the most important and meaningful part of our lives.

Consume

We need to consume to nourish ourselves, but some consume for pleasure. People today often search for meaning and satisfaction in listening, watching, eating, and drinking to find happiness, but they will never feel satisfied and will always want more. Meaning and fulfillment do not come from consumption alone.

Create

Happiness comes from creation (art, work, relationships, family), from overcoming challenges, and from work that reaches beyond ourselves. Creation is where joy is gained and where life is lived fully.

An art, a sport and a science

In a world without the jobs we grew up with, the book recommends every child specialize in an art, sport, and science to experience the full spectrum of beauty life has to offer. They tend to connect into a single theme. Here's an example of a student who likes music:

  1. An artJazz
  2. A sportDance
  3. A scienceThe math of harmonics & frequency

As educational games make subjects like math and science close to effortless, the teaching that matters most shifts to you: a healthy lifestyle, home economics, fitness, ethics, communication and culture. Sui Learning is built to teach exactly that, and to raise children who are competent, capable and happy in whatever world they inherit.

We are fortunate to live in such an incredible era. Let's be grateful and enjoy its bounty, without letting it consume us.

What makes it different

Four things school gets backwards

01

Context before content

School teaches the parts and hopes the whole appears later. Children who never learn why a thing exists forget it the moment the test ends. Every lesson here starts with real understanding.

02

Projects, not worksheets

Real work, finished and shown to someone. Failure is a step in the process rather than a verdict, because correcting your own mistake is where the learning actually happens.

03

Specialize early

A dozen years of basics most people forget, then a lifetime of debt to become employable, is a poor trade. We specialize early, so our 18-year-olds have at least as much experience and skill as a master's graduate.

04

Real knowledge and wisdom

Where school sticks to abstract skills, we teach the life lessons that build real success and happiness, from money management to social skills. Your child will grow up wise and confident, with a real understanding of life and the world.

What's inside

Seven parts

  1. One

    What School Gets Wrong

Before building something better, it's worth knowing what the current system actually does, and why it does it.

  2. Two

    The Basics

The handful of things every child needs, regardless of what they end up doing for a living.

  3. Three

    Choosing a Path

How a child finds a direction, and what to do when they change their mind.

  4. Four

    The Parent's Job

What you provide, as distinct from what you teach.

  5. Five

    How to Teach

The mechanics. Lessons, projects, and how to tell whether any of it is working.

  6. Six

    What to Teach

The subjects themselves, and how much of each is really needed.

  7. Seven

    Ethics

The longest part of this book, and the one that matters most. One topic a day.

Part Seven

One virtue a day

Twenty virtues which go over timeless truths that have guided humanity since the dawn of time. It's not a moral lecture, but a set of tools that will guide your child to success and happiness.

  • Peace
  • Honesty
  • Respect & Appreciation
  • Integrity
  • Caring
  • Destruction
  • Perfection
  • Thinking
  • Action
  • Efficiency
  • Love
  • Balance
  • Fear
  • Standards
  • Neutrality
  • Practice
  • Independence & Teamwork
  • Law & Order
  • Growth & Progress
  • Death

Who it's for

Parents who have decided to teach their own children and want a method that gives their children everything they'll need in life, not just algebra. Tutors and private teachers who work one on one. Teachers and community leaders who have the flexibility to teach kids well, instead of following protocol. Anyone who suspects the classroom model was built for a factory economy that no longer exists, and wants something better to put in its place.

You do not need to already know the material. A good deal of the book is about how to learn alongside your student, how to find consultants when you hit the edge of what you know, and how to tell honest progress from the appearance of it.

You being here shows that you care more about your child's welfare than tradition, as every parent and teacher should.
